I feel like I’m falling

I feel like I’m falling

like the floor below me is suddenly giving out

as if I’m on the precipice of a cliff

and the rocks under my feet give way

I’m grasping desperately for anything

but my hands fail to grasp a hold of something

and so I fall

~

I feel like I’m drowning

no matter how earnestly

I try to reach the surface

it’s still so far away

my lungs fill with water

they burn and yearn for oxygen

but none comes

~

I feel dizzy

like I’m going to pass out

the whole world feels like it’s spinning

as if I’m on a carousel and can’t get off

my head hurts and I can’t see straight

I start seeing stars

right before it all goes black

~

I come to with a loud gasp

my heart slows down

instead of continuing to try

to beat out of my chest

the looming peaks in my mind

the tragedies in my head

were my anxiety gone wild

~

I sigh

exasperated

my body feels worn out

tired and empty

yet still clinging

to the fragile hope
that someday it won’t be this hard.

This is such a relatable portrayal of what it’s like having anxiety. I have felt everything you described. Thank you for sharing this poem! It makes me feel less alone. ❤️
